What is your name? Shyle Lyons

What is your business? Merchants and Makers

Why did you start your business? My best friend, Meghan, and I wanted to create a market that was fun as a vendor to be a part of, and also appealing to shoppers. We knew we loved live music, good food, drinks, and highly curated vendors, so we started putting them together and the community loved the same things!

How long have you in business? Three years

What would you tell someone who wants to start a business? What advice would you give them? Do something that you love to do and that is filling a void in your community. Vendors were yearning for a FUN and successful marketplace, and we have helped to fill that void for them. Shoppers were also looking for something new and exciting, and we are able to help bring unique high quality items right to them in fun, unique venues all over West Michigan.
What is unique about you that helps you be successful in business? We spend a lot of time listening to the people around us. We talk to all of our vendors and shoppers regularly for feedback as to how we can improve and change. We have never felt like we have arrived or figured out how to do this - we always have to adjust and grow as our community changes and grows.

What sets you apart from every other business in your field? There are SO many great markets out there doing a wonderful job. One thing I love about our group is we are really good at is supporting each other. We have ‘maker support groups’ and very active open communication between our makers. They are like a family.

What is one major thing you learned about business? Being organized is KEY. I have spreadsheets and checklists for everything and still forget lots of things.

What is the one thing you attribute to your success? Our commitment to each other. To our community. We do this to bring together the people in our neighborhoods. To support the many talented makers and small businesses right here in our town. And we have FUN doing it!
